Take on techno in Frankfurt
Before Berlin claimed the spotlight as a global techno capital, Frankfurt was the sprawling hub for Germany’s electronic music. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, clubs like Dorian Gray, Omen and The Cocoon Club pulsated with house and techno beats, fuelled by international DJs passing through the city. But the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 shifted the cultural epicentre, as Berlin’s raw, sprawling spaces drew artists and clubbers, becoming the heart of Germany’s electronic revolution.

Frankfurt’s techno legacy endures, cemented further in 2022 with the launch of the Museum of Modern Electronic Music (MOMEM). This dynamic institution showcases electronic music’s roots and cultural impact, featuring iconic records, immersive installations and a deep dive into its artistic influence. It’s a fitting tribute to the city’s pioneering role in shaping the sound of a generation.
While Berlin thrives, Frankfurt remains a haven for techno enthusiasts. Clubs like Robert Johnson, famed for its intimate riverside setting, and Tanzhaus West, with its industrial edge, keep the night alive. Avani Frankfurt pays homage to this history with its vinyl-covered walls, glittering mirror balls and creative experiences like silent techno tours through the city and dj-led art sessions. It’s where Frankfurt’s electro past and modern style come to life.
